STEAM, AIR, AND HOT WATER EDITION

BACnet Now On-board For ALL Digital Recirculation Valves

The Armstrong Hot Water Group is pleased to announce that the BACnet MSTP protocol between The Brain® and Building Automation Systems (BAS) is now an integral, standard component on ALL DRV models. We’ve gathered a few frequently asked questions about what this means for you. Please take a moment to view the FAQs.

Anticipated Price Increase

A price increase is anticipated for all product divisions in North America. New pricing will go into effect April 15, 2024. We expect an average increase of 4% for the Steam and Condensate Group, Humidification Group, Hot Water Group, Heat Transfer Group (unit heaters only), and VERIS Flow Measurement Group. Please note that existing quotes will be honored for 60 days after the price increase goes into effect as long as the quote isn’t expired. Other updates such as the new Armstrong Nanobubble Generator will be added to the price book. New Price Books will be distributed no later than April 5, 2024.

Nanobubble Generator Proves Itself In The Field

Kohler selected Armada to keep ‘The Bold Look of Kohler’ shining through. Now, Kohler has added the Armstrong Nanobubble Generator to keep it that way!

The American Club, Kohler’s signature property that delivers a 5-star experience to guests from all over the world who come to play golf at Whistling Straits, was missing the mark in two areas. Hot water was taking too long to arrive in the guest rooms and when it got there, the temperatures were inconsistent. Midwest ATM Hank Lenzen, along with Greg Walthers from the Affiliated Steam & Hot Water’s Milwaukee office, were on the case!

“We already knew the project from when we bid the mechanical room refurb in 2014” Hank said. “We recommended the Brain at the time but were only working with the contractor and they ended up value engineering us out and going with a TMV.”

“This time around, we made sure we built relationships at the customer facility engineering level so it wouldn’t happen again,” Greg said. “Hank is always reinforcing that we have to know the owner, the specifier and the installer if we want to protect our work”.

Armstrong is a sage when it comes to hot water system design, operation and maintenance and Hank often leads the charge in that department. Instead of looking to place a single product, Hank wanted to provide a system solution and that starts with a complete HW system evaluation.

What the team discovered is that the existing TMV’s could not manage the low temperature differentials, there were also piping design issues, pump problems and ball valves closed to try and make the system work. There was also scale and related debris build up in the system.

Hank and Greg recommended a complete refurbishment of the existing steam/water heaters which were then set to 140F. A Digital Mixing Center for each zone with an Armstrong Nanobubble generator was piped in a side stream on the system return and everything was tied back to the Building Automation System through SAGE®.

“It was such a simple upsell to add the ANG” Hank said. “The system was scaling, and it was very evident to everyone”. A complete Armada package was the answer and Hank and Greg both know that we cannot just pitch products. Success comes from looking at the system from a holistic perspective.

Learn more about Armada and contact the Armstrong Hot Water Group. They will be happy to set you up for success just like Hank and Greg experienced with the American Club.

Hoya Paranoia!

If you were a college basketball fan in the 1980s and 1990s, you recognize the term “Hoya Paranoia”. Back then it meant protecting college basketball players like Patrick Ewing and Allen Iverson from too much press interference. Today, we could apply the same term to worrisome water scale problems.

The Thompson Athletic Center (named for the legendary coach John Thompson) on the campus of Georgetown University in Washington D.C., used the Brain® Digital Recirculating Valves to provide safe, comfortable hot water for the men’s and women’s showers. After visiting Armstrong in January and seeing the new Armstrong Nanobubble Generator (ANG), Dave Campbell of Associated Steam saw the fit of this new technology for Georgetown University.

“After learning about the ANG, I began to think of all the Brain and Digital Flo installations I have in the D.C. area. The water in D.C. is very poor and I refer to it as ‘Potomac sludge’”, Dave said. Dave promptly contacted the contractor who does the service work at Georgetown and introduced the ANG. “That’s all it took. They were actively looking at different scale remediation options and were getting close to installing water softeners”, Dave said.

A meeting on campus followed and now Georgetown is installing an ANG to see how it works. As it proves itself, more buildings will follow.

According to Dave, it couldn’t be simpler. “I offered them a free trial under the Scale Away in 60 Days program, but they were so enthusiastic that they cut a PO straight away”.

Trap Sizing Now Available Online

Trap Sizing (Trap-a-ware™) is now available online through the Armstrong Configurator. The Trap-A-ware™ program will help you size and select Armstrong steam traps for specific applications using known sizing parameters. Simply access the Configurator as usual and start a new configuration. Click here for a tutorial on how to use Trap-a-ware™.

Steam Filter Element Check Up Reminder

Steam filter elements need to be replaced for the filter to function properly. The amount of time that a steam filter element can last before being replaced depends on the application and the variations in the amount of dirt that a system contains. If you’ve sold a steam filter to a customer in the past, it’s a good idea to reach back out to the customer to make sure their filter is functioning properly and ensure they are properly supported. If the pressure drop is too great across the housing, the element is likely ready to be replaced. When replacing the filter element make sure to replace the housing gasket as well.
