STEAM, AIR, AND HOT WATER EDITION

Price Increase Effective May 2

Armstrong anticipates that a price increase will be coming for certain product groups and product lines effective May 2. After carefully analyzing increased materials and supplies costs and availability, we expect an increase from 7 to 10 percent for the Steam and Condensate Group, Humidification Group, Hot Water Group and VERIS Flow Measurement Group. Please note that the Armstrong Heat Transfer Group will not implement an additional price increase at this time. New Price Books will be distributed in late April.

Gear Up For Spring Improvements

Now is a great time to talk about BTU meters for cooling water distribution within colleges and universities, pharmaceutical, or any other campus setting that has a Central Utility Plant (CUP) that distributes chilled water to its buildings. Energy engineers and facility directors are the key people to target.

Inaccurate or failing meters could have a huge loss of revenue. Typically, universities, pharmaceuticals, and district energy campuses have hundreds of BTU meters on chilled water. A meter reading that is just 5 to 10 percent off, could mean tens of thousands of dollars in lost annual revenue. The VERIS Flow Measurement Group offers highly accurate Electromagnetic and Ultrasonic technology meters to solve the most difficult institutional applications. View our Higher Ed Playbook in the Armstrong User Portal and contact the VERIS Flow Measurement Group for more information.

On the Path To Restoring A Landmark Hotel

The Palmer House is a 150-year-old landmark hotel in downtown Chicago. Like many hotels, the Palmer House faces the challenge of maintaining a constant flow of hot water at precise temperatures. The Palmer House and its renovation project was further tested by a bankruptcy in 2020 and a planned re-opening the hotel during a global pandemic.

Regardless, Hank Lenzen and Affiliated Steam & Hot Water stayed the course after performing a hot water system assessment as far back as 2016. After more than a few starts and stops due to pricing pressures and the ownership transition, the team fended off competition and multiple contractor “value engineering" attempts to close the deal and land purchase orders totaling nearly $300,000 for three heater packages and three flow meters. Congratulations to the team for their persistence and for playing a pivotal role in restoring this landmark hotel!

We’re More Than Coils

You probably know the Armstrong Heat Transfer Group as the team that builds coils. Another way we solve customer problems is with our air-cooled and custom-built heat exchangers. Commonly used in applications where a reliable source of water may not be available or to costly, Armstrong air-cooled heat exchangers meet API 661 standards for refinery, chemical and power plant environments. These units are versatile and can be used in the following ways:
  • As a steam condenser where excess steam is called for in processing.
  • As a condensate cooler to return condensate at a specific temperature.
  • As an oil cooler to lubricate oil from equipment that needs to be cooled.
  • As a heat dump for close water tower cooling with no plume associated with typical cooling towers.
Armstrong air-cooled heat exchangers feature heavy duty, series 6000 construction making them ideal for energy intensive industrial environments. The motor assembly and direct drive fans have a proven track record of performance. Installation can be made in very low temperature regions and there's no need for field erection. Hail guards protect fins and steam coils are also protected against freezing. Each unit is custom made according to your specifications. Download our product information sheet and contact the Armstrong Heat Transfer Group at 450-378-2655 for more information.

Jail Break Creates Hot Water Sales Opportunities

In 2018, the Orange County jail in Santa Ana, CA worked with Drew Thomas and the Guy L Warden team to replace a master TMV installed in the facility that never worked correctly. Being a capital project, the jail needed to seek quotes from multiple contractors. Once the jail approved the Owen Group to design the project, GLW and Armstrong performed a site walk. The biggest hurdle in replacing a pre-existing unit was fitting the pre-packaged unit through the freight elevator. We had to develop a design that would split the DMC package into three separate pieces that could be loaded into the prison’s freight elevator to get it down to the boiler room for installation. Another issue the prison had was their thermostatic group fixture control.

Due to the success of the DMC80-80-80 project, the Orange County jail continued working with Jesus Lopez at GLW to replace all of the failing individual thermostatic mixing valves that controlled the loops for each group of gang showers in the facility. They also needed a new solution to stop replacing the cartridges continuously failing in the thermostatic mixing valve units. Jesus structured a demo installation for one of the new DRV 25s in a critical service area. Based on the success of the demo, they decided to replace all of the additional 9 loops with DRV 25 units which made this our highest single DRV 25 dollar order value to date and another 5 units are planned for expansion or replacement.

In case you missed the recent live Trap Management webinars, we have posted them on YouTube for your convenience: Please also check out our Armstrong Livestream Series and this latest episode featuring Steve Skarda, senior director of climate solutions for Procter & Gamble and Patricia Provot, president of Armstrong International discussing decarbonization of the light industry.

IFF To Conduct One Year Everactive Trial

Affiliated Steam sold a trial at International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. (IFF) in Madison, WI. For this trial, only 16 Eversensors have been installed, but the customer agreed to a one-year service contract, and we see greater potential globally with this customer.

A typical trial lasts 90 days and covers around 50 steam traps in an area covered by a gateway. Installation is done by Everactive to serve as a training opportunity for your team. All data are collected in a free SAGE trial account for analysis and reporting. Insight sessions are scheduled weekly or bi-weekly with the customer to assess the system and highlight the potential savings. After the trial, a summary of the findings is provided to evaluate the ROI and capabilities of the monitoring service. Please contact Philippe Moock if you have any questions.

Plastic Trap Update

We have recently made a change in manufacturing on our 1-AVC and 1-LDC models. These changes were made to improve the strength and durability of the equipment. The polysulfone material is a yellow tinted clear plastic, where the original polycarbonate was a clear plastic. The part numbers won’t change for the 1-AVC or 1-LDC. The 1-AVCW and 1-LDCW are still using the same materials and are suitable for use in their correct applications. The below list details the complete changes. Please click the below links to be directed to our new literature for these products.
  • The 1-AVC and 1-LDC are changing body, cap, and fittings materials.
  • The body is changing from polycarbonate to polysulfone.
  • The cap and fittings are changing from polycarbonate to nylon.

Conduct Thermal Assessments And Win An iPad

We had a great response to last year’s Thermal Assessment incentive program, so we are excited to announce its continuation! Thermal Assessments are a great way to uncover opportunities to improve the performance and efficiency of steam, hot water, and condensate systems as well as the safety, reliability, and integrity of the customer’s overall system. Conducting a Thermal Assessment is easy too – especially when using the Thermal Assessment application within SAGE. View the SAGE app tutorial and refer to these example mock assessments that represent a cross section of vertical markets.

As an added incentive, Armstrong will give a new Apple iPad to the representative that generates the most Thermal Assessments between now and June 15, 2022. Please submit your assessments to Nevena Iordanova by June 15th and we’ll notify the winner via email as the reports are tallied.

IDFs Now Available From The Armstrong User Portal

Each Armstrong group has had their own IDF/RFQ forms to collect information necessary to help process orders. We are working to standardize the flow of the documents and offer them in one location for easy access and use. The forms are available in the Armstrong User Portal. Go to the Industrial or Institutional Toolbox and navigate to the Rep Resources Sales Form Library. IDFs from the following groups are currently available and others are coming soon: Flow Measurement Group, Heat Transfer Group, Steam & Condensate Group.
