STEAM, AIR, AND HOT WATER EDITION

Smart Services Group Is Now The Armstrong Thermal Insight Group

In the recent months, Armstrong has been dedicating more resources to increase our efforts and capture decarbonization opportunities while building awareness of how important steam trap maintenance is to energy conservation and saving dollars. To better support this strategy, the ‘Smart Services Group’ has been restructured and will be rebranded as the Armstrong Thermal Insight Group. Its main objectives will now be to focus primarily on trap management activities and the digital transformation of thermal utilities. Smart products will remain part of the group’s core competencies to support the increasing adoption of digital technologies.

Two-Temp Control To Customer Spec Is Too Simple

Featured this month by the Armstrong Hot Water Group is an FRT66540R160FBS created for an assisted living facility in Richmond, Virginia.

This site required 28 gpm of 160F water for kitchen and laundry service, and another 32 gpm to supply the domestic loop, so Watt Mountcastle from Carotek turned to the AHWG for a Flo-Rite-Temp® (FRT) configured for two-temp control.

The high-temp zone will be managed by the FRT665 control valve paired with a thermostatic diverting valve to handle the continuous recirculation, while the low-temp zone will be managed by The Brain® Digital Recirculation Valve (DRV). A standard FRT665 would be assembled with a DRV50 with 2” piping, but in this case, the package was modified to customer spec with a DRV40 and 1.5” piping.

Multi-temp control from a single skid is just one of our many specialties that you too can offer as a simplified solution to your specifying engineers, contractors, and end-users.

Food for Thought: Your Customer Just Set Sustainability Goals. What’s Your Next Move?

How many of you play chess – and are good at it? First timers have a hard time figuring out how to play the game let alone having any sort of strategy or plan in place. The same is true for sustainability goals. It’s one thing to set goals to cut carbon emissions, reduce natural gas consumption, use less water, or recover useable heat. But what’s the plan? While setting goals is fine, validating results or simply knowing where to begin takes thoughtful planning and strategy. So, what’s your next move?

  • Customer A set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% over the next five years. What’s your next move?
  • Customer B set goal to reduce water consumption by one million gallons by 2022. What’s your next move?
  • Customer C set a goal to reduce natural gas consumption by 40% by 2024. What’s your next move?

The answer to your next move may depend on whether or not you have a plan – or how well you know your customer and their site. Do they test steam traps every once in a while, or do they have a Steam Trap Management program? Do they have a couple of flow meters or do they have a Monitoring, Measurement and Validation program in place? They want to improve thermal efficiencies, recover heat, and waste less water but do they have plans in place to minimize and optimize their thermal utilities consumption?

Before you make your next move, talk to your customer about their sustainability goals and find out what plans they have to meet those targets. Ask them about their timeline, what their pain points are and where they need help. Guide them on the next steps to take. This will help you put a winning strategy in place.
