Armstrong Service Grows Business With Teijin Limited

Back in October of 2014, Armstrong Service, Inc. (ASI) was introduced to Teijin Limited (known then as Toho Tenax). Teijin was in the early stages of finding a location to build their state-of-the-art carbon fiber facility to serve the automotive and aerospace industries.

Teijin was seeking a partner to provide a Central Utility Plant using the Design, Build, Own, Operate, and Maintain (DBOOM) model for engineering and construction along with long-term operations and maintenance. ASI was one of four companies competing for this work and in April of 2016, ASI was selected as Teijin’s partner to build and operate their new Central Utility Plant in Greenwood, South Carolina.

Teijin’s Utility Plant had a number of challenges to overcome including the ability to expand and grow as Teijin’s production facilities evolved. For example, in phase 1A, the Utility Plant must produce 13,000lbs/hr. of 240psig# steam and 40gpm of Deionized Water. As the plant is fully built out through 5 phases over the next 10 years, these requirements will increase to 500,000lbs/hr. of steam and over 2000gpm of Deionized Water.

In July of 2016, ASI and the engineering firm of GMK & Associates completed the Preliminary Engineering for the Utility Plant ($205K) and this September, we began the Detailed Engineering and Design work ($883K). The current schedule is to complete the Detailed Engineering by this December and construction beginning in early 2019 with completion of phase 1A of the Utility Plant in December of 2019. Current estimates place the phase 1A Utility Plant cost at $14MM, with all phases through project completion estimated at $50MM. In addition, ASI will provide a 10-year Operations & Maintenance agreement to support the phase 1A plant which will grow as the additional phases of the plant are built.

Crunch The Numbers With These Calculators

Armstrong has developed several calculators to help you conduct evaluations in the field for existing customers as well as project investments for potential customers.

The Field Use calculators cover a cross section of use needs and applications that include the boiler room, distribution, steam use, condensate return, thermal assessments, hot water and other utilities. There are 16 Field Use calculators available today.

The Customer Potential calculators will help you estimate the total annual investment/spend by customers based on the use of Armstrong products in their facility. We have four current Customer Potential calculators including HPI, Healthcare, Higher Education and VA Hospitals. Two additional calculators, one for Food and another for CPI, will be launched in the near future. These calculators can help you estimate the number of water heaters, coils, metering potential, condensate return packages, manifolds, traps and more. The more data points that you can supply will enable us to make these tools more accurate and valuable.

Both types of calculators can be accessed through the Open As App software.
